FEMINISM IS NOT AN F WORD PDF Print E-mail

PUT SIMPLY FEMINISM IS THE BELIEF THAT MEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL AND DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS AND OPPORTUNITIES.

Feminists are men and women who belive that women and men deserve equal rights without exception!

Modern Feminists are called Third Wave and are currently working for the right to health care, family leave, equal pay, education and much much more. First Wave Feminists were the suffragettes working for women's rights to vote in the early 1900's and the Second Wave were the so called 'bra burners' who fought for the right to birth control and terminations in the 60's and 70's.

Blacktown Women’s and Girls’ Health Centre in partnership with the Women’s Activities and Self Help (WASH) House is currently working on a new project:

“Feminism is not an F word”

Our aim is to highlight that Feminism is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago when our sisters first campaigned for the vote, a decent wage and an end to child labour. We believe that there is an ongoing responsibility to educate the next generation of young women and society on feministic philosophy in order to achieve equality for all.

Services provided by Blacktown Women's and Girls' Health Centre are provided within a feministic context which:

Recognises the social, environmental, economic, physical, emotional and cultural factors which influences women's health

Recognises and challanges the effects of sex-role stereotyping  and gender discrimination on women's health and well-being

Reflects the whole of a women's lifespan, their various and changing roles and responsibilities, not just their reproductive life

Recognises the importance of maintaining well-being by the focus on preventative practices

Actively encourages the empowerment of women in both the personal and social aspects of their lives

Values women's own knowledge and skills and their right to make informed decisions about their health
